HEDPE ROCKS

Are you a fan of rap/rock bands? If so then you might like the band Hed PE or hed Planet Earth. The group was formed in 1994 and originates from Huntington Beach, California. Hed PE plays an interesting type of music known as “G-punk,” which is a blend of punk rock & gangster rap.

There were also world music and classic rock influences in the band’s second album. Meanwhile, the album “Back 2 Base X” included influences like classic punk bands like Clash and Sex Pistols. Other influences of other albums include thrash metal. In terms of its musical style, it’s been referred to as “G-punk.” The band’s music includes various genres including hip-hop, hard rock, reggae, ska, heavy metal, and punk.  The band has also added other genres including jazz, funk, blues, and industrial. The band’s lyrics also discuss many different subjects.

ROCK CONCERT

They include organized religion, extraterrestrial life, cannabis, and 9/11 Truth movement. The band supported nationalism in its 2004 album “Only in Amerika” but has also supported liberal politicians. Hed PE was formed the ex-member of The Clue Jared Gomes and guitarist Wes Geer. The two band members became friends while they were involved in the hardcore punk scene in Orange County. They helped form the band by recruiting other members including Chizad (guitarist), Mawk (bassist), BC Vaught (drummer) and DJ Product 1969. The band is named “hed” as an acronym meaning higher education. Hed PE became popular at local events.

HEDPE INFLUENCES

Due to various legal issues, the band was required to change the name of the band to Hed PE with the acronym representing “Planet Earth.” The band released their first album in 1997 after signing with Jive Records. The album received some positive reviews that gave it high marks as being a good choice for music fans who liked punk and late 90s heavy metal. However, due to the album’s low sales figures and contract issues, the band was able to pay back cash advances to Jive Records. One band member explained that the band had big expectations based on factors like the band’s mix of punk and rap.

HEDPE ALBUMS

It was explained that the company actually had other offers from companies like Sony. However, the company’s options were limited due to the big amount of money they owed to Jive. Then in June 2000, Hed PE was included on “Nativity in Black II,” which was a tribute album for a Black Sabbath album. A few months later in August the Hed PE released its 2nd studio album titled “Broke.” The album peaked at #63 on the Billboard 200 charts. Meanwhile, the album’s first single titled “Bartender” peaked at #23 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart of Billboard.  The album was praised for being more innovative.

BAND HISTORY

Many other albums in the genre during 2000. However, the album did receive some negative reviews and often due to the lyrics. During the following year, Hed PE performed in Ozzfest with various other bands like Korn. Meanwhile, the second single from the album “Broke” entitled “Killing Time” was produced before the soundtrack for the movie “3000 Miles to Graceland.”

Then in March 2003, Hed PE released its 3rd studio album titled “Blackout.” The album peaked at #33 on the Billboard 200 charts. Meanwhile, the title track reached #21 on a chart for Mainstream Rock Tracks. “Blackout” was praised for providing strong guitar and rhythm. It also received credit for effectively combining heavy rock/rap using good hooks. Then in 2004, the band made a big change when Jaxon became the fourth person to function as the band’s guitarist.

The band’s 4th studio album was titled “Only in Amerika” and was released after the band left Jive Records. The new album was released on Koch Records in October 2004. It peaked at #20 on the chart for Top Independent Albums as well as #186 on Billboard 200. The album received some criticism for being anti-conservative but focusing too much on the lyrics over the music. Hed PE made another big move in 2006 when it moved to Suburban Noize Records.

BAND MEMBERS

It then recorded its 6tyh studio album titled “Back 2 Base X.” The goal of the album was to return to rock music’s basics and used less studio equipment than its past albums. The band released the album in June 2006. That was the same day Jive released a compilation album that didn’t receive the ban’s permission.  “back 2 Base X” hit #12 on the chart Independent Albums and also #154 on Billboard 200.

The album was criticized for similar problems as “Amerika.” In other words, it was described as being a political rant. One critic wrote that the album would please the loyal fans but wouldn’t be very successful in making new fans. Then during the following year, Hed PE released its first live album titled “The DIY Guys.” In 2009 the band released its 7th studio album titled “New World Orphans.” There were 3 different versions released.

Hed PE then released the band’s 6tyh studio album titled “Insomnia” in June 2007. The album peaked at #16 on the chart Independent Albums as well as #138 on Billboard 200. The single “Suffa” was one of the top songs requested on Hard Attack on Sirius Satellite Radio. Meanwhile, the music video was picked as one of the Top 10 videos that aired on MTV’s Headbangers Ball  (2007).

They each had a unique set of bonus tracks. The sixth drummer joined the band that year. Hed PE released its next album in October 2010 and received mixed reviews. The band later announced that the new album “Evolution” would be released in July 2014.

Over the years the band had many changes as various members left the band. After some changes in 2015, the only remaining original member was Jared Gomes.
